The Catholic Women’s League
(For God and Canada) MISSION STATEMENT: The Catholic Women’s League of Canada is a national organization, rooted in gospel values calling its members to holiness through service to the people of God. St. Ambrose Parish is fortunate in having a Catholic Women’s League consisting of 64 members. Following is a little background of some of the activities. Our annual CWL Convention is a huge event, held over two days in May. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the League in action, and learn how it functions. The more members we have, the better we are represented when we vote on important issues. There are over 85,000 CWL members across Canada and these numbers carry a lot of clout with the government when “Resolutions” are presented to them. Councils are free to submit “Resolutions” which are very well researched and presented at the Toronto Diocesan level, Provincial and National levels and must be passed at each level before they are sent to the Federal Government for legal passage. A list of Resolutions that have been passed can be found on the CWL website www.cwl.ca (You will be very surprised at some of the topics that have been put forth for passage.)The convention ends with a banquet held on the second night, with wonderful guest speakers, etc. It is well worth attending. We also support our parish family by catering to funeral lunches, when requested. Our yearly bazaar, which takes place in October, is our biggest fundraiser. The CWL, along with our parish, work very hard to make this a worthwhile project and it is very successful. We take part in other parish functions during the year, both in our own parish and in other parishes, including Leadership Courses, Development Day, celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Good Counsel (who is the patron Saint of the CWL), and World Day of Prayer. Although, due to limited space, we have just touched the surface of some of the activities that the League is involved with, you can see that the CWL is not just a “social club” or fundraiser. At St. Ambrose we incorporate fundraising, spiritual events and camaraderie. We feel that the CWL provides us with many benefits and enables us to grow both spiritually and socially.
